HUGO, the complete maintenance free battery backup solution for all gas-powered tankless water heaters and appliances during power failures.

Flow Sensor:

  • Brass flow sensor:  Standard 3/4" NPT male thread on both ends.  Push fitting adapters sold separately.
  • ABS plastic flow sensor:  3/4" BSP (G) thread on both ends.

Temperature Sensor:

  • The new temperature sensor can now be either placed inside the HUGO unit or it can be stretched up to 5 ft of distance.  This allows the temperature sensor to be mounted near a cold-water supply line in some installation situations.

Delay Functions: HUGO is designed with 2 delay functions:

  • Flow sensor delay:  When the flow sensor first senses a flow, it will commend HUGO to start providing power for at least 5 minutes, if after 5 minutes, there is still no flow, HUGO will turn off AC output.  This function allows the time needed for some appliances to complete its restart cycle when power is lost.  This will also allow tankless water heaters to remain on when the user is in between water use, such as washing hands or dishes.
  • City power restore delay:  When city power is restored, HUGO will delay for one (1) minute before allowing city power to be fed into HUGO or downstream appliance.  This will eliminate electricity spikes and allows electricity to become stable and safe before entering expensive equipment.

    Easy Installation

Posted by Rao Bhandaru on Jun 3rd 2021

Really like this battery backup Easy to install as continuous running. Did need to call a plumber to install the flow sensor. Paid an additional $120, but worth it. I was not comfortable cutting PEX tubing. Overall very satisfied with purchase. Hope it never gets activated, but if power goes out, I will be with hot water.

    Works as expected

Posted by Paul Leonhardt on Feb 28th 2021

Bought this as a way to have hot water during power outages with my tankless water heater. Testing shows this works as advertised. The only reason for the 4 stars was that the holes for the mounting brackets were not tapped correctly. I had to re-tap the holes for the provided screws to work. Sripped to screw heads till I decided they were not correct. The construction is very quality otherwise. Real commercial quality.

Hugo battery back-up for Rinnai direct vent furnace

Posted by Tom on Dec 13th 2020

Live in the mountains at 8200 feet above sea level. Have experienced -20°F to -40°F in past winters. Currently rely on a Rinnai Direct Vent Furnace for heat. No woodstove. If power goes out I’m counting on Hugo to keep me alive. Local power transmission went out six-seven times one evening about two weeks ago. Refrigerator, stove, Internet ... all doing the power surge shuffle. Direct vent furnace via Hugo didn’t skip a beat and kept me toasty. Every aspect of the purchase – especially SPS Power Solutions customer service was excellent! At best Hugo may be a lifesaver. At the least, I think of Hugo as a $500 potential life insurance policy which may possibly give me peace of mind for the next 15–20 winters.

    Hugo battery backup install

Posted by Glenn R Drenkhahn on Dec 3rd 2020

Only issue I had (and still do) is in-line fittings that work on the flow valve to 3/4" rigid copper. I tried female swivel hose fitting but cannot get that to seal as it would require tightening so much it will strip the plastic threads. I looked at Home Depot, Lowes and on line and still have not found any fitting to work with 3/4" hard copper supply. I have it simply plugged in now and that was no problem. Next step is to consult customer service for a link to what may work I MUST say this unit is robust by comparison to the "pure sine wave" computer UPS backups also recommended by customer service. cost difference is only maybe $30-50. In my opinion Its the only consideration for demand hot water heaters. EVERYONE should have this installed (or install themselves as it plug n play) if for no other reason to surge protect a sizable investment and at the same time avoid down time on hot water supply - even if only to finish a shower your in the middle of! Having an option for hot water for 2-7 days in a power outage (depending if you install flow valve to preserve battery) is simply a no-brainer.

    Hugo

Well made. I haven’t had a blackout yet to see it’s performance. Fed x ground shipping took 10 days to receive, very poor. This unit was very easy to set up.

Like the peace of mind this unit will provide for me as I don't have a whole house generator. Not sure if the chirping audio alert sound that is mentioned in the FAQ will be an annoyance or issue since it mentions it silences after 5 minutes. To me it should have been designed to only come on if the battery is getting too low to operate. Will see once I experience a loss of power & need hot water.
